Castle Crags is a dramatic rock formation in Northern California. The formation and surrounding habitats are protected by Castle Crags State Park, and Castle Crags Wilderness Area of the Shasta- Trinity National Forest.
There are great views of Mt. Shasta at the base of the hike and at the summit.
I took the Castle Crags trail which is 7.2 miles round trip to Castle Dome with 2,611 feet of elevation gain. It rates as "moderate". Since I went on a Friday afternoon, there were only a handful of people on the tail also which was nice.
These granite spires are more than 170 million years old, and are 6,000 feet tall.
